The Connecticut Affiliate of Susan G. Komen is encouraging the children of Connecticut to get involved in their local Race for the Cure. They are calling for school aged children to participate in their Kids for the Cure t-shirt design contest, sponsored by Cigna. Submissions are due to Komen Connecticut by April 14th.

All designs submitted will be posted on the organizations’ Facebook page, as well as displayed in the kid’s area at the Race in Bushnell Park. The winner of the contest will have their design printed on the back of the children’s t-shirts at the Race for the Cure in Hartford on June 7th.

Each year, Komen Connecticut plans several activities for children to do on Race Day including a Kids’ fun run, face painting, arts and crafts and many other activities. “Every year we try to get even more kids involved with the Race for the Cure,” says Anne Morris, CEO of Komen Connecticut. “Reaching out to children through our t-shirt design contest is a great way to teach children about helping the community as well as encourage artistic creativity.”

Last year Komen Connecticut received more than 80 submissions. Last year’s submissions are featured on flickr.com/KomenCT. This year, Komen’s goal is to obtain at least 100 contest submissions. Komen Connecticut plans to visit the Avon Public Library, the Simsbury Public Library, the West Hartford Public Library and the New Britain Boys’ and Girls’ Club.

Over the past four years, Komen Connecticut has funded approximately $1 million in community grants to local organizations providing lifesaving services for women in need across our state. Programs include the Hartford Hospital Mobile Mammography program, a Spanish-speaking support group at the Hispanic Health Council and patient navigation services at Saint Francis Hospital, among others. Seventy-five percent of Komen Connecticut’s net proceeds support local breast cancer programs across Connecticut and the remaining 25 percent is invested in research to find the causes and cures for the disease

If you or anyone you know would like to participate, contact race@komenct.org or call 860-321-7806. For additional information about the 2014 Race for the Cure, visit KomenCT.org.

The rules for the t-shirt competition are:

  • Design must incorporate the Komen pink ribbon somewhere in the art

  • Incorporating children and race themes in the design are strongly suggested

  • Bright colors work best

  • On the back of the artwork, please clearly print the following:

  • Designers name

  • Age

  • Name of school

  • Year in school

  • Home address

  • Parent or guardian name

  • Contact telephone number.

All entries must be submitted by to: Connecticut Affiliate of Susan G. Komen, 74 Batterson Park Rd, Farmington, CT 06032. Questions call 860-321-7806 or email race@komenctorg. All submissions become the property of the Susan G. Komen Foundation and may be used for promotional purposes.
