What to Do in the Event of a Motor Vehicle Accident

With the summer driving season underway here are some helpful tips if you, your friends or loved ones are involved in a motor vehicle accident.

No one wants to think about the possibility of being involved in a motor vehicle accident, especially during the busy summer travel season.  Please keep these helpful tips in mind, in the event you, a friend or a loved one become a party to an automobile accident.

1.  Immediately after the accident, do not get out of your vehicle.  Call the police/911 and let them know your location, the details of the accident and if you are injured.

2.  When the police arrive, they will want to see your driver's license, your vehicle's registration and insurance card.  This is also the time to exchange insurance information with the other vehicle.  Keeping these documents in your glove compartment is an easy way to find them in this type of situation.

3.  Tell the police officer what happened, but do not admit fault.

3.  Seek medical attention at the scene if you are in any pain. Many people wait to obtain treatment, thinking that the pain they are in is not severe enough and will resolve on its own.  Pain tends to get worse over the next couple of days after an accident, not better.

4.   Make sure the police officer gives you an accident summary at the scene.  The final report takes about 7-10 days to be completed and will be available at the police department in the town in which the accident occurred.  If the accident occurs on a state highway/roadway, the state police will have this information.

5.   After the accident, as soon as you are able, call your insurance company and report the accident.  Have the accident summary available as the insurance agent will have questions that will most likely be summarized in the accident summary the police officer has given to you.

Hope this helps and have a safe and enjoyable summer.  Attorneys Eric and Lisa Foy;  Foy and Foy, 928 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury;  www.foylawct.com (860) 658-4530
