‘Old School’ Photography Exhibit at FVAC Fisher Gallery

Avon Old Farms School has announced that several of its photography students will display their works at the Farmington Valley Arts Center Fisher Gallery. Selfies, Transformations and Symbols: Photography "Old School", is a study of traditional and foundational darkroom printing techniques, as well as alternative printing and processing techniques.

The photography exhibit runs April 24 to May 6, with a public opening reception Tuesday, April 29th, 6 to 8 p.m., and a special public reception to spotlight the main photographers on Sunday, May 4th, 3 to 5 p.m.  Fisher Gallery hours: Wednesday – Saturday, 12 to 4 p.m., with additional hours on Sunday, April 27, and by appointment 860.678.1867.

Ms. Cristina Pinton, the chair of the visual arts department at Avon Old Farms School, notes that the department believes firmly in the historical and traditional methods as the foundation to all digital techniques, especially chemical processing and the silver print process, including alternative methods in multiple exposures, darkroom manipulation, and processes such as liquid light. “The potential for learning is more intrinsic and intuitive with hands-on processes, especially for boys who learn through physicality,” she explains. “There is greater sensibility to details, and a direct and physical correlation between the cause and effect of each of their movements and decisions. It gives students the opportunity to master an art performed for more than 100 years, and to decipher their personal interpretations and vision through patience and reflection.”

Avon Old Farms will next introduce digital arts into its curriculum, with darkroom photography as the course’s prerequisite, reflecting the school’s belief in expanding into contemporary methods and tapping into modern culture while still remaining invested in the more traditional aspects of art-making.

The Farmington Valley Arts Center is located at 25 Arts Center Lane in Avon Park North, Avon, Connecticut. From Route 44, turn onto Ensign Drive, and Arts Center Lane is the second left. Parking is free. For additional information, call 860-678-1867 or visit www.artsfvac.org.
