Why are you seeking office?
I am seeing re-election to the Canton Board of Education because I believe that with strong leadership, Canton can continue providing a top-quality, 21st century education that promotes student achievement for all, and is an outstanding value for all Canton taxpayers.

What experience do you bring to the table?
I have served on the Canton BOE for nearly 6 years. I was elected Board vice-chair in 2011, and Board chair in December 2012. I have chaired the curriculum and communications committees, and served on the policy, negotiations, and finance committees. As Board chair, I recently made changes to our agenda procedure to allow more transparent discussion of Board business and enable the Board to spend more time in planning for the future of our District.  I also am the Board’s representative to the Capital Region Education Council (“CREC”) and in that capacity have participated in lobbying efforts to curtail unfunded state mandates and bring the voice of our small District to the state legislature.

What do you feel is the town's most pressing issue?
All Canton Boards and Commissions and citizens must work together to continue improving the quality of life within town.  There are competing interests for our precious tax dollars, and leadership must lead by the example of respectfully listening to constituents and finding common ground.  We all love this town, and discussion on controversial topics must be rooted in the belief that ultimately we all want what is best for Canton.

What do you love most about town?
I love that Canton is a true New England small town, where you can know your neighbors, your kids’ friends and their families. My husband and I first lived here 16 years ago, moved away for several years, and happily returned 9 years ago to raise our daughters in the best little town in Connecticut.

What do you like to do for fun?
Most of my free time is spent at my two daughters’ year-round sports events.  I love hiking with my yellow Lab, cooking, and gardening, and I am an avid Boston Red Sox fan.

How can residents keep up with you?
I am always available to constituents with questions or comments related to the BOE via email, l_hill@cantonschools.org.
