Your Take: People Turn to Social Media Following Boston Marathon Explosion

Written by Jessie Sawyer

Many runners detoured after the explosions went off near the Boston Marathon finish line Monday were separated from their families and did not have their phones with them to communicate with loved ones.

Even people who had their phones, like Avon resident Sarah Wallace, reported that receiving and making calls was difficult and texting was intermittent. Officials limited cell phone service to avoid further detonation in the event of more bombs near the course.

Many runners, like Avon resident Fernanda Jacobs, posted on Facebook to tell their friends and family that they were okay. Wallace asked her husband to do so after receiving many messages on her phone, which was losing battery power after searching for a signal when cell phone service was low.

Have you ever turned to social media to either find out information about loved ones in an emergency situation or communicate with family and friends during a crisis? What form of social media did you use and why? Does your family have an emergency plan in case you are separated at a big event or during a disaster? Tell us in the comments!
