Who's Canton's Person of the Year?

TIME magazine named President Obama their person of the year for the second time. Tell us who you think should win from our town!

On Dec. 19, Time magazine named President Obama their Person of the Year, again!

The magazine invited votes on 40 candidates, including the president, Gabby Douglas and Kim Jong Un. Other options included The Mars Rover and the Higgs Boson Particle, Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, and Apple CEO Tim Cook. But, the president took the title again four years after he first won the award as president-elect in 2008.

But who cares about the same-old, same-old? Who is Canton’s Person of the Year—the man or woman who, in Timespeak, “most influenced the news this year for better or worse”?

Tell us your pick in the comment section below!

Bobby Martin would be my pick for Canton's Person of the Year. Bobby has done an incredible job working with volunteer organizations on improving how the town looks, making it inviting to visitors and newcomers alike, not to mention townfolk. He gets things done quickly and with great enthusiasm. Anne Duncan, Pres. Cherry Brook Garden Club.

My first choice for Canton's person of the year would be John Fitts. He has been a tremendous asset to the town for being a responsible, fair reporter. His work on Patch has been helpful on getting up to date information about the happenings in town. Realizing that this might be a conflict of interest, my second choice would be Mark Quattro.

Stan Krasnowsk. He cares for our children young and old. He was a founder and is the manager of our teen center, the unofficial director of the Youth Services bureau and the forever director of little league. His many hours are volunteer hours and his personal money. He is an anchor of reliability and caring for all young and old.

Claire Cotes. As the director of social services for this town she touches many lives with kindness and compassion. The good she does for our community often goes unnoticed and under appreciated.

My pick would be Claire Cote Canton Senior and Social Services Director. She is such a kind compassionate person to all . She treats all who come for assistance with dignity and respect and guides them to become self reliant. She always has a kind word and a smile on her face.

I believe Ann Gagnon is one of so many amazing residents of Canton. But if I had to suggest a name it would be Ann. She is an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, the founder/creator of Gifts for Canton and president of Focus on Canton, an organization that provides, oversees and funds so many of the services offered to the residents of Canton. She spends an enormous amount of time organizing and planning activities that directly impact the people of this town and she works closely with the Social worker/Senior director, Chief of Police, Superintendent ,First Selectman & churches to ensure that all the people in Canton are being taken care of. She does this quietly and effectively and has volunteered her time without hesitation. I do believe Canton has many generous and involved citizens that is often difficult to name just one. We are blessed that Canton residents take care of each other and are always there for whatever the cause may be. Without the many volunteers and countless hours of donated time, we would not be able to offer so many services...from boards & commissions, to coaches & parent volunteers, we all pitch in to make Canton what it is today.

Mark Quattro. It's sad that most of us didn't know about all the good that he did in town until after he passed away. We are fortunate to have many residents who give of their time and talents, but I think Mark should win the honor this year. He helped more people than we'll ever know.

I do feel all that named here and more do fit person of the year for giving of their time and themselves to our great town without expecting anything in return. But we all lost Mark Ouattro and I can write about him all day long he helped everyone people all over this state and never expected anything in return. We lost his good man several months ago and how fitting to honor his memory with Canton's Person of the Year

Hi Donna. We put out a poll based on these nominations and Claire did win. We’ll have a brief story in the morning. Thanks!
