Walk For Hunger Takes Place Saturday

Proceeds to Benefit Canton Food Bank.

For the second year, area residents are invited to a Walk for Hunger at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 14 from which 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the local food bank.

Last year, roughly 200 walkers raised $2,000 and the for the second year now, 100 percent of the funds stay right in town, organizers said.

“We certainly hope to get more this year and it looks like it’s going to be great day,” said Kathy Corkum, vice president of FOCUS on Canton, a non-profit organization that coordinates many of the charitable and assistance efforts in town.

Back at the community center, Cherry Brook Health Center will provide some water, apples and cookies at the finish.

Cost is $10 for adults, $20 for families and $3 for students. Dogs are welcome and free and Cherry Brook Kennels will hold a raffle for a “Doggie Day Spa.”

Last year’s participation was encouraging and people still need help, Habbal said.

“I think we’re all aware of the economic situation,” she said. "There are people struggling and they need our help.”

“I think the walk is a great opportunity for residents, businesses, groups and organizations to come together and take an active part in helping their neighbors who may be struggling to put food on their tables,” said Claire Cote, the town’s director of social and senior services

The food bank serves more than 150 families at the  volunteer-run facility, hosted at Trinity Episcopal Church, Cote said.
