Toby Scheel Retires After Years of Helping Seniors

Canton hosts farewell party Friday.

For the past few years in Canton and many in Windsor, Toby Scheel was particularly apt at helping seniors.

For her last day of work Friday, Canton hosted a retirement celebration, attended by numerous present and past colleagues, town employees, seniors and her husband Bill.

“I was really overwhelmed by everyone’s kind words and well wishes,” Scheel said.

Senior and Social Services Director Claire Cote gave numerous examples of specific situations in which Scheel helped seniors with daunting medical costs and life-altering situations.

“She has had the ability to positively touch peoples’ lives in a number of ways,” Cote said.

Scheel worked in Canton for three and a half years as administrative assistant for the Senior and Social Services Department.

She helped run the office, utilized her knowledge of insurance and Medicare, and worked with seniors.

Prior to her years in Canton, Scheel spent 22 as an elderly caseworker for the town of Windsor.

It was after her two daughters were grown that Scheel obtained her Master’s degree in Human Development and Family Relations from the University of Connecticut, with a Certificate in Gerontology, Cote said.

Scheel said her and husband Bill plan to do some traveling and want to spend more time with family, including two grandchildren.

She will miss those she’s worked with.

“I will definitely miss the seniors,” she said.

“It was a great pleasure working with Claire,” she added. “She’s a great asset to town.”
