'Significant Winter Storm' Expected; Tuesday Morning Commute Could Be 'Treacherous'

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Northern Connecticut, describing a "significant" storm that will deliver "a period of heavy snow followed by sleet, freezing rain and then all rain" on Monday night into Tuesday.

"The final snowfall totals will be determined by the timing of the transition from all snow to mixed precipitation," the weather service said. "This will result in treacherous travel conditions later tonight into at least Tuesday morning. There will be a high impact on the Tuesday morning commute across much of interior Southern New England."

Snow accumulations could be from 4 to 8 inches, along with a coating of ice, across Northern Connecticut, the weather service said. Strong winds are predicted as well.

The Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 9 p.m. Monday to 11 a.m. Tuesday.

This winter has been marked by a series of significant storms causing school closures and delays and by Board of Education policy, another snow day will result in a day lost of April vacation, beginning with Monday, April 15.

Tuesday is also slated to be a early dismissal due to parent teacher conferences. If there is a delayed opening, school will will be in session for a regular day and parent/teacher conferences will be rescheduled for a date and time to be determined, Superintendent Kevin Case told parents in an e-mail. Lunch will be served in such as case.
