Red Cross Has Emergency Need for Blood, Platelet Donors

Drive in Canton on July 10

Submitted Release

The American Red Cross has an emergency need for blood and platelet donors of all blood types. In June, blood donations are down more than 10 percent across the country, with 50,000 fewer pints of blood available than expected. There is almost half the amount of Red Cross Blood on the shelves today than there was at this time last year.

It is crucial that there are opportunities for donors to give blood. And it is through the support of dedicated sponsors like you that make that possible. We need your help NOW, patients are depending on us. Please encourage everyone on your contact list to make an appointment at the upcoming drive on July 10 (see details below).

Blood donations typically decline during the summer months because donors are busy with seasonal activities and overlook giving. Blood is a perishable product. Red blood cells have a shelf life of only 42 days and platelets just 5 days, so they must be replenished constantly - there simply is no substitute.

Canton will hold a blood drive Tuesday, July 10 at the Canton Community Center, sponsored by the Canton Chamber of Commerce from 1:30 to- 6:30 p.m. Call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment.

The blood donations this drive can provide will help boost the current blood supply and prevent a further drop. Your effort can make a significant impact in someone's life. Blood and platelets are needed for many different reasons. It could be the little girl with a rare blood disorder, a family member fighting cancer, or a friend involved in a car accident.
