Police, Firefighters Respond to Small Fires Along Route 44

Three separate spots warrant attention.

Police officers and firefighters responded to three small fires on the north side of Route 44 shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday morning.

“We’re grateful we had motorists who put the calls in quickly,” said police Chief Christopher Arciero.

Responding officers used extinguishers to initially put out at least some of the fires and the Town of Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department was quickly on scene to take care of the others as well as any smoldering, officials said.

The fires were on the north side of Route 44 between Swimming Pool Road and Indian Hill Road.

Leaves and grass on the side of the road are dry and while the cause is unknown, it is a good reminder for motorists to be avoid  throwing cigarette butts out the window, Arciero said.
