Canton Photo of the Day: Ice Fishing on the Farmington

Jan. 26, 2013

A lone fisherman tries his luck in and on the Farmington River in Collinsville Friday.

Wow, am I sorry you published that photograph. While it is lovely, I hope that others don't follow suit. The ice on the river, even during a long cold snap, is NEVER stable or reliable. The Farmington River has a strong flow under the ice, leaving a mixed pattern of thick and thin areas of ice. It is impossible to predict which areas of ice are safe, and the odds of falling through are huge. PLEASE spread the word that venturing out onto the ice on the river is NEVER a good idea.

Sarah's comments above are spot-on. Additionally a fall through the ice, if noticed by someone, would cause an extremely difficult and dangerous rescue for volunteer firemen and emergency personnel.

We are not advocating this behavior but simply showing that someone participated in it. I would have loved to talk to the gentlemen but chose not to venture out myself since the ice varied greatly.

Maybe this should have been submitted for a Darwin Award.

As a fellow ice fisherman I have plenty of experience ice fishing on rivers such as the Housatonic and Farmington and know for a fact that under certain conditions it s entirely safe. Only someone without ice fishing exerience would be naive enough to claim that what this man is doing is unsafe.
