Recently, the Canton community has pitched in to help neighbors in need on numerous occasions, often under tragic circumstances.
An event this Saturday may be slightly less dramatic but shows that the helping spirit is nothing new. For the 16th year, Focus on Canton is hosting Neighbors Helping Neighbors Day, set for 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3.
During the event, a small army of volunteers helps residents, mostly elderly, with tasks that can include leaf raking, dump runs, painting, setting up a computer printer, washing windows and more.
Already 125 people have signed up for 50 tasks, said event co-organizer Kathy Corkum. Volunteers of include scouting members, youth groups, service organizations and others.
But extra hands would be useful, especially after the hurricane created a little more work in some situations, Corkum said.
Anyone who needs help with a task or wants to volunteer can call Corkum through Friday at 860-693-8612.
Focus on Canton helps coordinate many efforts in Canton such as the fuel bank and food bank.
Also Saturday, a fundraiser at Dentfix Express, LLC will benefit Gifts for Canton, a drive for the less fortunate that is sponsored by Focus and the Canton Chamber of Commerce.
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day, Dentfix owner Steve Roberto will offer "paintless dent removal to remove small dings, dents, and creases from your car.
Work will be done at a discounted rate of at least 20 percent and start at $50. Proceeds will benefit Gifts for Canton.
