Neighbors Continue to Help Neighbors in Canton

16th annual effort set for Saturday, second event to help Gifts for Canton.

Recently, the Canton community has pitched in to help neighbors in need on numerous occasions, often under tragic circumstances.

An event this Saturday may be slightly less dramatic but shows that the helping spirit is nothing new. For the 16th year, Focus on Canton is hosting Neighbors Helping Neighbors Day, set for 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3.

During the event, a small army of volunteers helps residents, mostly elderly, with tasks that can include leaf raking, dump runs, painting, setting up a computer printer, washing windows and more.

Already 125 people have signed up for 50 tasks, said event co-organizer Kathy Corkum. Volunteers of include scouting members, youth groups, service organizations and others.

But extra hands would be useful, especially after the hurricane created a little more work in some situations, Corkum said.
