The Flood of 1955 dealt a devastating blow to Canton, especially the village of Collinsville.
In the aftermath of two hurricanes that swept through the state, the worst came on Aug. 19, 1955. In Canton, two people died from the flood, according to Hartford Courant archives. They were Herman Hackbarth, 65, of Collinsville, who was being rescued from his home, and David Murray, a two-year-old killed by a helicopter's rotor blade.
