Lions Clubs, Rotary Club Plan 100,000 Meals Project

Public welcome to help with effort

The Canton Lions Club is partenering with other area clubs, the Rotary Club of Avon-Canton and the Feeding Children Everywhere to assemble and distribute 100,000 meals for needy families in our towns and in areas that need assistance.

Many residents of our relatively affluent area do not realize the prevalence of hunger in our communities, Canton Lions Club members said. Canton's Food Bank serves nearly 1,000 people each month. Among the 41 towns in the Greater Hartford region, only 5 have successfully filled the "hunger gap," the difference between what people have to eat and what they need.

The meals assembled by Lions, Rotary and Feeding Children Everywhere are a nutrition-rich blend of rice, lentils, dehydrated vegetables and spice. Gluten-free and diabetic-friendly, these meals area too often the only meals that recipients may eat in the course of a day.

Volunteer teams are scheduled to gather on Saturday, April 27, at the Canton High School Cafeteria to assemble the meals. Those participating include clubs from Avon, Burlington, Harwinton, Simsbury and Unionville, the Avon-Canton Rotary and more.

Help is needed in the following areas.
