Celebrate Columbus Day in Canton

Columbus Day is on Monday, Oct. 8 this year.

Columbus Day, a nationally recognized federal holiday, falls on Monday, Oct. 8 this year. While it is an opportunity for some to sleep in on a Monday, the holiday itself is also interesting, and a great time to celebrate and shop.

Columbus Day remembers Italian explorer Christopher Columbus’ long journey across the Atlantic Ocean to the “New World." The voyage was victorious when land was first spotted on Oct. 12, 1492.

The Canton Transfer Station will be open with regular hours this Saturday, Oct. 6, during the holiday weekend.

Canton Town offices will be closed for the Columbus Day holiday on Monday, Oct. 8.

The day is also considered a celebration of Italian heritage, as well as a huge shopping day in the U.S.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt is responsible for making the holiday a federal one in 1937.

What is closed on Columbus Day? Most banks, government offices and the U.S. Postal Service will be closed to observe the holiday.

Columbus Day might be the country's most pointless holiday. Let's go over a few things which make it so: 1. It should not be a celebration of Italian heritage as "Italy" or never "Italians" did not exist at the time of Columbus. 2. Columbus was not Italian, he was from Genoa. 3. His accomplishment is clouded by the fact that Scandinavians "discovered" the New World well before he did, he didn't even realize he discovered anything new, and thought was in India. Luck shouldn't be accorded its own holiday. 4. As for celebrating Italian heritage, Columbus was a great example of the failure of the city states that preceded Italy. Genoa refused to fund his mission and only with the support of the Spanish was he able to sail. If anything, we should be celebrating Spain's vision and mastery, not Italy.
