Canton Boy Scout Troop 177 visits Cape Cod

Camping, riding, cooking and nature all part of trip.

Submitted story

Scouts from Canton Troop 177 and some of their fathers spent the weekend of May 19 camping at Nickerson State Park in Brewster, Massachusetts.

The plan for the day Saturday was to complete a minimum 25-mile bike ride during the day.  Most of the troop ended up completing a 30-mile ride, following the Cape Cod Bike trail from Nickerson State Park into Harwich then Chatham, and back again.

The riders enjoyed either a bagged lunch or a fresh seafood lunch on the fish pier in Chatham, with one of the local harbor seals watching us from below. The scouts, as is the norm, were responsible for cooking their own meals. Eggs, bacon, sausages, and homefries ruled the breakfast menu for the weekend, while the scouts baked a Shepherd’s Pie in a dutch over for their dinner Saturday night.  The fathers enjoyed a dinner of jambalaya, also cooked in a dutch oven.

The troop and parents extend their congratulations to Dillon Donovan and his father Greg, who completed a 50-mile bike trip during the required 8 hour time period on Saturday. This is the most difficult part of fulfilling the requirements for the Bicycling merit badge. Dillon and Greg completed the trip to Chatham and back to Brewster, then went north to Wellfleet and back.

Troop 177 has had an active camping and hiking schedule this year. Besides the Cape Cod trip, the Troop has done two separate hikes along sections of the Appalachian Trail in northwest Connecticut, and a mid-winter trip to Savoy Mountain State Park in the Massachusetts Berkshires. The Troop’s next campout is scheduled for mid-June. The Troop is going to Hunter Mountain in New York State, with a day hike and zip-lining on the agenda.

Troop 177 meets in North Canton at the North Canton Grange, and welcomes anyone who would like to learn more about our activities specifically, and scouting in general. Further questions can be referred to Scoutmaster John Vaillancourt or any of the other adult leadership at troop177leaders@troop177canton.org.
