Cinco de Mayo Lacrosse Fundraiser

Last week, La Trattoria had an exciting benefit night for high school lacrosse teams. With its colorful Cinco de Mayo theme, auctioneers could try and win silent auction baskets (many made by lacrosse teams themselves), enter raffles, or just enjoy the taco buffet and bar. Many prizes offered in the silent auction included ESPN gifts, vacations, gift cards, office chairs, fishing supplies, movie baskets, art supplies, and, of course, margaritas. The fun part for the lacrosse teams was that each team had to make a basket. All the parents would donate a little to theirs. Also included in the night was a comedian, who my parents wouldn’t let me stay for. The purpose for this night was to raise money for high school lacrosse teams. You may be wondering, why is the Canton Youth Lacrosse Association running this night? In 2011, the CYLA decided they wanted high school teams. But because of a tight budget, the board of education can’t fully support the teams. So, the board of education said that to start volleyball and lacrosse high school teams, each year the association has to raise $20,000 to support it. Although this may seem like the board of education is saying that they’re on their own, the association is slowly trying to get the board of education to start funding the teams. But overall the night was successful. Around $15,500 was raised, $7,000 was from the raffle and $8,500 was raised from the silent auction. Linda Jackson would like to thank the donors, sponsors, and attendees. “Without them, we wouldn’t be able to raise enough money to support our high school teams.” Hopefully, the association can succeed in raising the money so our high scholars can have a ‘shot’ at the sport.
