(Update) Contractors Begin Site Work on Future CVS Parcel

Lawton Road will be used as temporary construction entrance but truck drivers told to avoid going north into neighborhoods.

Updated 11:20 p.m. Thursday March 22.

Preliminary site work for the planned CVS at the corner of Route 44 and Lawton Road has begun.

In 2011, Konover Development Corp. and Canton 44 LLC successfully obtained site plan approval for the CVS. The work will also include utility improvements as well as some changes to Route 44 and Lawton Road. Two other development areas are eventually planned for the property.

“Konover Development Corporation has been working for over a decade to develop an underutilized parcel of land located along Albany Turnpike (State Route 44), the Town of Canton’s  commercial corridor, resulting in an improved the tax base for the town," said Stanley C. Glantz, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Konover. "We are pleased to be bringing CVS/Pharmacy to town. To do so, we are making a significant investment in both off-site and on-site improvements which we hope will set the stage for other tenants to be attracted to co-tenancy with CVS and the Town of Canton’s excellent demographics. We expect to begin construction later this week and that CVS will be open by year end. “

Some equipment has been brought to the site and tree clearing could begin as early as today (Tuesday, March 20) town officials said.

A contractor will install fencing around larger trees that will remain on site and other trees not being taken down were flagged with the understanding that they are to be saved, town officials added.

Site work will be minor until pre-construction meetings are held, Glantz said.

Until utility work is done on Route 44, access on Lawton Road will be used as a temporary construction entrance but the contractor knows that trucks are not to go north from Lawton into the residential area, town planner Neil Pade said.

Some in town had inquired about the chimney on the property. Glantz said Tuesday morning that it will be demolished.

Updated portion

On Thursday (March 22) a citation, which carries a $150 fine, was issued to the property owner at the 115 Albany Turnpike parcel when the contractor initially failed to put "proper protections" in place, town officials said.

The contractor, The Butler Company of Windsor, received the citation, has apologized and remedied the situation, officials said.
