Gun Store Owner Plans to Open in Mid April

Shop to offer new and used rifles, handguns, accessories and some fishing bait and gear.

By mid April, long-time hunter and avid sportsman Perry Polderman plans to open American Shooters, LLC on Route 44.

Polderman will offer new and used rifles, handguns, ammunition, some accessories as well as live bait and a few fishing supplies at the 155 Albany Turnpike location.

“I’m just a sportsman,” Polderman said. “I like guns and using them and I’ve also collected quite a few.”

Polderman said he has been hunting for about 40 years and some of that personal collection will be for sale.

He said the pre-owned models, trades and the handgun offerings will set him apart from large gun retailers in the area. He also plans to offer fair prices on new guns as well.

“I plan to be very competitive with my pricing,” Polderman sad. “I want to get the customers here.”

In addition to the guns and supplies, Polderman said safety is an important focus of the business. He plans to offer classes in handgun safety, a subject the National Rifle Association has certified him to teach.

And knowing the proper techniques and safety rules are paramount, he said.

“Everyone should know how to use a gun,” Polderman said.

Polderman said he has also focused on the safety of the store itself and has installed solid steel bars on all windows and doors. He is also looking at offering devices that keep guns out of unwanted hands at home, such as safes that only respond to programmed fingerprints.

Polderman hails from Torrington, where he is active in many organizations, such as the Elks Club. He is also a free mason and member of the Northwest Sportsman’s Association.

Polderman said he wants to publicly thank those who have helped him get the location ready, including Don Cadwell, Tim Lawler, WendyAnn Polderman, Joe Recupero, Lisa Garabedian, Joe Garrity at Canton Sign Shop and Steve Lingenheld.

Since he has a full-time job, Polderman will initially open the store mostly evenings. And open from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 10 to 7 p.m. Mondays. He also plans to host a grand opening celebration, likely Sunday, April 15.
