Fans Say Goodbye to South Windsor's Vivie and David Glass' Delicious Desserts

Braving the early morning chill, scores of cake lovers — some from as far away as Rhode Island — lined up outside of Vivie and David Glass’ Delicious Desserts in South Windsor Saturday to buy one more slice of heaven.

The mood before the doors opened Saturday was a mixture of anticipation and grief, as patrons looked forward to picking up their delectable treats, but with the knowledge that it would be the last chance to obtain them.

After 30 years of doing business, the last two of which were in South Windsor, David and Vivie Glass decided to close up their legendary cake business after the death of the their youngest son Adam in August.

David Glass said in an interview several weeks ago that he and Vivie were moving to Vermont to be near his oldest son and his granddaughter.

Patrons on Saturday expressed their sympathy for David and Vivie as well as what amounted to despair for the loss of their favorite confections.

“I’m devastated; I’ve been following David Glass for three decades,” East Windsor resident Barbara Schley said.

When asked to explain why customers were so upset, one person in line responded with an incredulous look.

“Haven’t YOU ever tried one his cakes?” she asked.

Evidently the cakes are so good, people who ordinarily look like they aren’t given to hyperbole struggled to find words.

“It’s just heaven on Earth,” Tracey Kearns said. “The taste, the texture. Plus, he’s been phenomenal. He was gracious enough to give us the heads up to give us the chance to experience the cakes before he closes in spite of his grieving.”

Indeed, for the last several weeks, people have left the small business on Chapel Road with as many as 13 cakes to stock up.

“I’ve been a customer for years,” Granby resident Joan Ducharme said. “You cannot make his cake. The ingredients he uses … the prices are so reasonable, the quality is superb. ….

“A gem is leaving the area.”

In a telephone interview Saturday, David Glass said that it was, no pun intended, a bittersweet day.

“We were happy and sad all at once,” he said. “We’ll miss our customers and we are happy to be moving to Vermont. We really love our customers and we’ll miss them. They’ve been so kind and considerate during these past couple of months.”

And while the closing marked the end of three decades and what David Glass said was “millions” of cakes made, his fans should not despair too much, as he and Vivie are publishing a book with his recipes.

“It’s been fun,” David Glass said.
