Canton Chamber Dedicating Golf Tournament to Memory of Mark Quattro, Gardner Graves

The Canton Chamber of Commerce is dedicating its 20th annual golf tournament to two long-time members and community leaders who passed away in the span of a year.

In June of 2011 L. Gardner Graves Jr. died of cancer. Approximately one year later, attorney Mark H. Quattro died unexpectedly on a golf course in Bristol. Both were long-time community leaders, chamber members and tournament supporters.

Among many other activities, Graves sponsored the putting contest at the annual event, where he also allegedly served ever-popular margaritas.

Among numerous community and chamber activities, Quattro generously supported the organization's Canton High School scholarship fund. He was also an avid golfer.

"He had a deep passionate for the sport," said chamber executive director Phil Worley.

This year's tournament is set to take place at Hop Meadow Country Club in Simsbury on June 3.

Gary J. Roman, president and chief executive officer at Collinsville Savings Society, said he is excited about the course since it's one that many golfers do not get to play on very often.

"I am pleased they picked this course," said Roman, who has helped organize other tournaments for many years. "This is an exciting opportunity for us and hopefully a draw for golfers."

Those who register by May 1 will pay $150 for an individual golfer or $600 for a foursome. After then the price bumps to $165 for individuals.

Hole-in-one prizes are being provided by O'Neill Chevrolet Buick, Northwest Hills Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, Mitchell Auto Group, Benidorm Bikes and Larsen ACE Hardware.

The event includes on the turn lunch, a dinner, a raffle and more. There will also be prizes donated by local businesses, including ones in a mixed category.

"We're really encouraging women to play," said golf tournament committee chair Marge Harmon.

The chamber is also seeking sponsors to add to the tournament sponsor Norcom Mortgage and Platinum sponsors Simsbury Bank, A. R. Godbout & Company, The Shoppes at Farmington Valley and Collinsville Savings. Those interested can contact Harmon at (860) 693-2012 or harmontravel@me.com.
