[Updated] The Week in Arts and Entertainment: Hurricane Irene Edition

A weekly round-up of events around Canton in art, music, theater, film, dance, comedy and more.

Gallery on the Green

Artists' guild and gallery space 's next show, "Masks," is hung and ready for the planned opening reception on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. Light refreshments will be served courtesy of the guild. Billed as an exhibition and fundraiser, the exhibition, curated by David Holzman, runs through Sept. 25 and will include a Masked Ball on Sept. 24. This Sunday, the gallery will not be open during regular hours due to the impending storm.

The Shoppes at Farmington Valley 

Tonight, Friday, Stanley Maxwell appears on the courtyard outside at The Shoppes at Farmington Valley for their last show in the "Jammin' on Jim Brook" summer weekly series. The free show starts at 7 p.m.

The "Stanley Maxwell Jam," featuring bassist Mark Crino plus trumpeter Stephen Haynes and guitarist Kevin O'Neil of Shack, and the subsequent screening of "Toy Story 3" that was slated for Saturday has been postponed until Saturday, Sept. 3. Check next week's column for more details.

On Tuesday, the will be holding a fundraiser night benefiting the Hartford Food System. There will be a raffle, and part of the proceeds from pizza sales will go directly to the charity. 

Summer Cool-Down Blast

The is hosting a free on Sunday from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the Green with live music provided by ' teachers and students. Make your own sundae with ice cream from . 

The Hub

Acoustic party band Gopher Broke returns to the Hub tonight, Friday, at 8:30 p.m. 

LaSalle Market 

It's time again for 's Band Night, which occurs on the last Saturday of each month. House band Con Doty and Bloodbrother will transform the restaurant into a blues club for few hours this Saturday from 7 to 10:30 p.m.

Bridge Street Live

Roots singer, songwriter and guitarist Walter Trout descends on tonight. Trout writes on his website, "In a sense, I've almost created my own genre. . . I've assimilated so many styles and so many influences from the great adventure of American music."

The Armed Forces Comedy Tour on Saturday occurs right before the participating comics, Mark Riccadonna, Carole Montgomery and Kevin Downey Jr., travel to Afghanistan to entertain the American troops stationed there. Bring a chapstick to the show, and it will be delivered to the troops! According the the venue, all active personnel and veterans get half off their tickets with the code "gousa" (case sensitive). 

Purchase tickets in advance at www.41bridgestreet.com. All shows this week are scheduled for 8 p.m. with doors open at 7 p.m.; the venue is all ages. 

The Crown and Hammer Restaurant & Pub

Tonight, Friday, The Substitutes play a duo set of rock covers at the  starting at 9:30 p.m. Farmington Valley parents might notice a teacher or two they know in this band!

On Saturday, the popular singer-songwriter John Mayock returns for a night of originals, many from the repertoire of songs John wrote for his band, The Homesteaders.  

Chamber Stroll Postponed Until August 31 

The Canton Chamber of Commerce ",” which includes open houses at several arts-related businesses along with restaurants and other downtown spots, originally scheduled for Thursday the 25th, was postponed due to rain. It will be held on Wednesday, August 31, from 5-7:30 p.m. 

Collinsville Farmers Market Canceled

This week's farmer's market is canceled due to the impending storm. Live entertainment at the market will resume next week with D.C. Jones. 

River City Art Center

Registration for fall art classes is open at River City Art Center, a teaching studio run by Collinsville resident and artist Kate McAllister. Kate is in the midst of moving from her current space on River Street to a new space on Center Street, where she will share space in the Swedish church with . Free Weekly Events

The sign-up list fills up fast for the popular Open Mic Night held at each Friday night at 6 p.m. hosted alternately by Eric Paradine and Coyote. Be sure to call ahead or arrive early if you'd like to play. 

Open Mic Night at the Fireplace Cafe continues on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. Regulars and new participants alike are welcome to join in the jam. 

The Crown and Hammer's Open Mic night is Wednesdays at 9 p.m., and Trivia Night with Brian is on Thursdays.  

The  (192 Albany Turnpike, Canton) hosts weekly Karaoke Nights on Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 p.m. 

Entertainment at  Restaurant features classic jazz by Swing ’39 with a guitar and upright bass duo on Thursdays from 7-10 p.m. and a trio, including a clarinet and saxophone player, on Fridays from 7-10 p.m.

At , artist Jim Koplar hosts an "Art Jam" on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. For a $10 cover charge, art supplies and instruction are provided in a casual, supportive, fun environment.
