Sixth Graders Sing for Music Awareness

Final performance will take place Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.

Canton may show strong support for its schools music program but in many areas efforts have been severely hampered by budget cuts.

Canton Intermediate School sixth grader Ashley Faucher-Farrell is a music lover who wanted to highlight the issue. So for her Social Action Project, she tapped the talents of some of her fellow CIS Chamber Singers for a performance at the Canton Senior/Community Center, holding four rehearsals ahead of time.

With the help of teacher Patrick Allen, 5 girls performed a few popular hits Tuesday and Faucher-Farrell spoke about the issue.

"This performance is about schools cutting their music programs," she said.

Later she said that in a former school, she did not have a good music program.

"I chose this project because without music in my life it would be a lot harder to get by," she said. "Singing is just a great outlet for me and its a good way to express myself. You see music benefits you more than you'd think because it has been proven to improve test scores, relax people, and music can even help in the healing process. There are no down sides to music so why get rid of it?"

The girls will give an encore performance downstairs at the Canton Community/Senior Center at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
