The novel traces the decades-long obsession of Ricardo Slim Somocurcio with Lily, whom he first meets when she is a teenager in Lima, Peru.  Although a product of the slums, Lily is masquerading as a wealthy Chilean girl, and Ricardo is smitten.  Later, Ricardo’s work as a translater for UNESCO takes him to Paris, London, and Tokyo, where he rediscovers Lily, who is in each of these locations and  has donned another name and identity.  Lily changes, but Ricardo’s obsession endures.

Each year in September, the Monday Night Book Club celebrates a culture with a book discussion and a pot-luck.  This year, the culture is South American, and members will bring dishes with a South American flair.  (In previous years, the club enjoyed French and Italian pot-lucks.)

Copies of The Bad Girl are available at the library.  Canton Public Library is at 40 Dyer Avenue, Canton.  For information:  (860) 693-5800 or www.cantonpubliclibrary.org
