'Spin For Nancy' Raises $15,000 for Local Woman with Cancer

Mini-golf event on June 22 will also benefit the family.

A fundraiser for a local woman battling breast/brain cancer has raised more than $15,000.

"Spin for Nancy," was held at Frequency Fitness Sunday to benefit Nancy Richard, a Canton mother of five and breast cancer survivor who in March was diagnosed with two cancerous brain tumors.

"We so appreciate the strength you're bringing today," event originator Deirdre Lloyd told the last group of spinners (stationary bike riders). "I just want to channel it right to Nancy — when she sees the pictures and when she sees the sweat and effort put forward today to help boost her and her family."

A complication from one of two surgeries has left Richard with physical challenges and she has not been home in more than two months. She is also beginning radiation treatments.

The oldest Richard sibling, Chelsea, has spent many hours taking care of her younger siblings while her dad works as a teacher and high school track coach. Many local residents and friends have also stepped up to help with meals, rides and other efforts.

The idea of a spinning (riding and exercises done on a stationary bike) fundraiser to help the family was organized by Deirdre Lloyd, whose own daughter Eden has faced a similar struggle. Eden and one of Richard's kids attend preschool together.

Andrea Tulley and Jenn Almeida co-organized the event and Frequency Fitness donated the space and Bagel Chalet and Cake Gypsy food. (See more details on the background of the fundraiser in this earlier story).

For the fundraiser, riders or teams of riders sponsored bikes on an hourly basis. Between the sponsors and general donations, it raised $15,000.

A second children-oriented fundraiser, organized by a family member and friend, has been scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. on June 22 at Canton Indoor Golf Center. For $10, kids (or adults) can play a round of mini golf and get a small ice cream cone. Tickets are available at LaSalle Market and Deli (cash only).

General donation checks can also be sent to:

Nancy's husband John, interviewed before the Spin total came in, said the support was "overwhelming."

"We can't thank the community enough," he said. "I don't know what you can say to the people that help you take care of the most precious gifts in your life."
