Preview of Parks & Recreation Programming

Spring/Summer 2011

While the spring/summer edition of Canton Connections, detailing Canton Parks & Recreation programming, is not dropping until April, About Town readers can whet their  inquiring minds with the following preview of upcoming activities.

Many favorite activities from last year will be returning, including: Family Fun Day and Explorers Day Camp at Mills Pond Park. In addition, there will be clinics and camps for tennis, golf, basketball, soccer, hockey, skateboarding, and volleyball. Yoga and Zumba remain on the schedule. And, there’s the town pool, of course.

Sports enthusiast? U.S. Sports Squirts Camp will introduce young children to a wide variety of different sports. In much the same vein, U.S. Sports Multi Sport Camp exposes older children to over 15 sports during the span of a week.

There will be two art-venture camps under the, “Let’s Gogh Art” umbrella; one will focus on the worlds of 'Fairies and Dragons;’ the other will create the perfect, ‘Beach Party.’

Kids will also be able to participate in new summer camps for lacrosse and volleyball. Adults will have the opportunity to take tennis lessons: in the spring, two mornings a week until school is out; then again until Labor Day, one evening a week.

An exciting addition to the summer schedule will be the introduction of a four-day Canoe & Kayak Camp. Fundamentals of paddling and safety will be covered on different types of boats. And, students will have the opportunity to kayak on Class 1 whitewater.

Parks & Recreation will also be presenting a new concert series. There’s more, but you will have to wait until April for the surprises.

As a bonus, About Town is also including a quick scan of activities from other Farmington Valley park & recreation departments. From Super Heroes to Sinatra; Chef Training and golf lessons, there is much of interest to supplement the Canton spring/summer experience:

Avon Recreation & Park has a number of new programs including: Golf Lessons for Women; Chefs in Training (for children); a Kickball Clinic; and a variety of new sewing classes. For 2011, Avon will also be offering a trip to the Canadian Rockies, by train.

Farmington Recreation’s new programming includes: Soccer Camp; a bus trip to Boston for a Harbor Cruise; a Summer Solstice Hike; and a concert series including appearances by Sounds of Sinatra and the 102nd Army Band.

Simsbury Culture, Parks & Recreation has trips to Red Sox games and the Bronx Zoo. In addition, they are offering a number of new programs: Kid’s Yoga; a Fencing Camp; and what is sure to be a favorite, a Super Hero enrichment program.

T-minus about one month and counting.
