Gifts for Canton Enters Final Stretch

Stock the Cruiser set for Dec. 7.

Just a few weeks ago, the Gifts for Canton Drive needed some $5,000 to purchase holiday gifts cards for those struggling in Canton.

As of Thursday night toys and other donations were still needed but Ann Gagnon, chairman of the effort, was optimistic that she would have the funds to purchase enough grocery, clothing and related gift cards.

The Gifts for Canton effort, which involves a holiday distribution of the gift cards, toys, food and more is sponsored by the Canton Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations.

At a Chamber Holiday Holiday Network & Nosh at Canton Historical Museum to support the effort Thursday night, the Rotary Club of Avon-Canton also donated $1,000.

Gagnon did not have an exact figure Thursday night but said it looked like the financial goal would be met.

"I really want to thank all of those people that stepped up and made a difference," Gagnon said.

With a holiday distribution upcoming next week, the effort is now focused on Saturday, when members of the Canton Police Department and the Shoppes at Farmington Valley will host a Stock the Cruiser event from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. While toys are needed, Gagnon said gifts go to individuals of all ages and items such as teenage-appropriate gifts and winter hats and gloves for adult men and women are also great.

Items can also be dropped off in the donation boxes placed at businesses throughout town, which will be out through Sunday. Last minute donations can also be brought to the police department through noon on Monday.

Holiday Gifts will be distributed at the Canton Food Bank on Dec. 10. Proof of residency is required. Food Bank clients will be asked to have their intake cards as well. Please contact Ann Gagnon at (860) 693-4988 or the Chamber of Commerce at 693-0405 with questions or requests. Pick up of donations can be arranged. Gifts for Canton is sponsored by the Canton Chamber of Commerce and supported by Focus on Canton, the Town of Canton, the Canton Lions Club, and the Rotary Club of Avon-Canton.

While the holiday drive involves a large push the effort is year round, Gagnon said.
