Gifts for Canton Distribution Set for Today

Donations down but organizers still thankful, cash still helpful for year-round efforts.

Today struggling Canton families will get a little holiday boost with the Gifts for Canton Distribution at Trinity Episcopal Church.

On Monday, volunteers were busy at the Canton Police Department sorting gifts that had been collected at local business, donated directly or given at the “Stock the Cruiser” event last Saturday.

The distribution will begin between 9 and 9:30 a.m. Proof of residency, such as a food bank card or identification, along with a  current piece of mail, is required.

Last year, 432 people benefited from the distribution donations. On  Monday event chairperson Ann Gagon said donations were definitely down but still she said she wanted to thank those who contributed.

It’s also not too late to help. Sponsored by the Canton Chamber of Commerce and supported by Focus on Canton, the Canton Lions Club, and the Rotary Club of Avon-Canton, the effort is a year-round one, Gagnon said.

Federal, state, and local funds used to help the fuel bank, food bank and other efforts only go so far, she said. When gifts funds are available, it used to help those who fall through the cracks, she said. Donations can be sent to Gifts for Canton, c/o The Canton Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 704, Canton, CT 06019.
