Friends Present $15,000 to Canton Public Library

Funds help purchase materials, passes and programs for adults and children.

On Friday, June 10, The Friends of The Canton Public Library presented a check in the amount of $15,000, to Robert Simon, Library Director of The Canton Public Library. These funds were raised from the Friends 2010 book sale, the on-going 2011 membership drive, a book sale which is held throughout the year within the library, a holiday sale of gift quality books, and the sale of book bags.

Funds have helped purchase items such as:

  • Books, downloadable audiobooks/e-books, computer software, a circulating collection of Wii games, DVDs, compact discs, etc. for adults, teens and children
  • Fifteen admission passes to Connecticut museums, cultural sites, state parks, and beaches
  • Information databases (Learning Express Library, Historical Hartford Courant and Ancestry.com)
  • Children’s programs (storytellers, magic shows, science demos, singers, craft workshops, weekly yoga-themed story times for ages 3 through 8, etc.)
  • Adult programs (author visits, music concerts, programs on food, gardening, and personal organization; annual crossword puzzle tournament, etc.)

The Friends is now focusing its energies on raising funds for the upcoming year's donation to The Canton Public Library.  Anyone interested in joining as a supporting member, and/or an active member can go to the library website, www.cantonpubliclibrary.org, to download a membership application, can pick up a membership application at the library, or may call the library at (860) 693-5800, and leave a message for Carol Shimelman, and an application will be mailed.
