Eagle Badges Presented to Christopher Mutch, Tyler Steers

Boy Scout Troop 177 of Canton recently honored the advancement of two Scouts to the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank of Boy Scouts of America.

In a joint ceremony on Saturday, August 10 2013, at the Cherry Brook Grange, Christopher Mutch and Tyler Steers were presented with their Eagle badges, in a ceremony attended by not only family and friends but also representatives from the Town of Canton and Connecticut State Representative Tim LeGeyt.

Chris joined Pack 177 in Canton as a Tiger Cub in 2002. He progressed through the Cub Scout ranks, graduating from Pack 177 after he completed the Weblos II program and receiving his Arrow of Light Award in February 2007. In 2007 Chris moved to Troop 177 as a new Boy Scout. He worked his way up through the Boy Scout Program until he successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on June 10, 2013. While he was a Boy Scout, Christopher earned 25 merit badges and held a number of positions of responsibility including Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, and Quartermaster. Chris was also active at Canton High School being named to the Honor roll several times as well as receiving Varsity Letters in Track, Cross Country, and Wrestling. He made it to the State Open wrestling tournament 2 years in a row, as well as being named to the Academic All State Wrestling Team in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013. In his Senior year he also received the Technology Department Scholar award at Canton High School.

Christopher's Eagle project consisted of the removal of a rotted out bridge in People's State Forest, on the Charles Pack trail, and the replacement of the bridge using Telephone poles and oak decking so hikers and snowmobiler's can utilize People's State Forest.

Tyler joined Pack 77 in Canton as a Tiger Cub in 2002. He progressed through the Cub Scout ranks, graduating from Pack 77 after he completed the Weblos II program and receiving his Arrow of Light Award in February 2007. In 2007 Tyler moved to Troop 177 as a new Boy Scout. He worked his way up through the Boy Scout Program until he successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on July 24, 2013. While he was a Boy Scout, Tyler earned 28 merit badges and held a number of positions of responsibility including Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Den Chief and Senior Patrol Leader. Tyler was also active at Canton High School being named to the Honor roll several times as well as being named as a Scholar Athlete in Track and Cross Country. Tyler was named to the Spanish Honor Society as well as Captain for the 2012 Canton Cross Country Team. Tyler has started his Freshman year at Arizona State University, where he plans to study accounting.

Tyler's Eagle Project consisted of locating the town lines on the Farmington Valley Greenway and the Farmington River Rail Trail, working with the Rail Trail Council to come up with a suitable sign, then constructing and installing these signs at each town line intersection in the Farmington Valley.

Only 3 to 4 percent of boys that enter Boy Scouts continue on to earn the rank of Eagle.  

Troop 177 has been in existence in Canton for over 30 years and has had 30 boys continue on to earn the rank of Eagle Scout.
