Canton Names New Top Dog

A 10-year-old Border Collie takes the honor this year.

Major Rogowski, a 10-year-old Border Collie owned by Laura Rogowski, was named Canton's Top Dog Tuesday after a drawing in the Town Clerk's office.

The number one pup will wear the #1 dog tag and received a bowl full of goodies.

The contest, sponsored by the Town Clerk, aims to draw attention to dog licensing, which is required by state statute by July 1 each year.

Of the licensing fee, $1 stays in Canton to support the town's animal control program and the rest goes to population control efforts through the state Department of Agriculture, according to a previous Patch article.

Dog licensing is done all year round and if you missed the due date, only a $1 fine is levied. See the town's website for details.
