Canton Lions Club, Feeding Children Everywhere Lead Effort to Help Feed the Hungry

Meals to be distributed to area food banks.

The Canton Lions Club and Feeding Children Everywhere led an effort to pack more than 60,000 meals at Canton High School Saturday.

Teams gathered in production lines for the effort and packed and sealed the bags, which consist of lentils, rice, a blend of six dehydrated vegetables and pink Himalayan salt. Only hot water is needed to cook the six-meal pouch.

In all, 150 volunteers from 22 organizations packed 63,360 meals, said Robert Bessel, Canton Lions Club member. Among those who helped were the Lewis Mills Lacrosse team, St. Patrick Church, ShopRite, Focus on Canton, CATA (Canton Adolescents Taking Action), Avon-Canton Rotary, and 8 Lions clubs — Avon, Burlington, Canton, Harwinton, New Hartford, Simsbury, Thomaston and Unionville.

The meals will be distributed to area food banks, schools and charities designated by the volunteer organizations.
