WIDE OPEN GOLF CLASSIC CELEBRATED 32nd CHARITY FUNDRAISER

On October 4th, 144 golfers gathered at Blue Fox Run in Avon for the 32nd Annual Wide Open Golf Classic Tournament and Charity Fundraiser.  The beneficiaries of the tournament were the substance abuse programs at the Avon, Canton, Lewis S. Mills and Northwestern Regional 7 high schools and also the Clinical Care Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.  Organizers of the tournament were Dave Regan, Ryan Mains and Dr. Matthew Keefe from Canton Valley Dental.  Last year, the Wide Open Committee decided to schedule Chris Herren, a former guard of the Boston Celtics, to speak at Northwestern Regional High School 7 and Lewis S. Mills High School.  Chris Herren spoke of his addiction to drugs and alcohol and how it led to the eventual loss of his basketball career.  His presentation was October 18 at both schools and was so well received by the students that the Wide Open committee  decided to schedule Chris Herren to speak again at all 4 local high schools (Canton, Avon, Lewis S. Mills, and Northwestern Regional High School 7) next year.  The date of next year’s presentations has yet to be announced.  On October 3rd, 2014, The Wide Open will be celebrating its 33rd Golf Tournament Charity Fundraiser at Blue Fox Run in Avon.  If you are considering sponsoring a hole for next year’s event or participating, please contact Jill at Canton Valley Dental, (860) 693-0887.
