State Rep. Tim LeGeyt Rolls Up His Sleeves to Help 'Bag Hunger'

CANTON- Last month, State Rep. Tim LeGeyt (R-17) joined Joseph Family Markets in the fight against hunger.  Rep. LeGeyt, along with town officials, officers, administrators, and volunteers, rolled up their sleeves and participated in ‘Help Bag Hunger Day’ at the Canton ShopRite.

“It was a privilege for me to participate in this great event, and to raise awareness about the insidious battle against hunger,” said Rep. LeGeyt.  “With one in seven households struggling to afford food, we must realize that it is our neighbors or family members in need of help.  I’m pleased to join Joseph Family Markets and ShopRite in this campaign and to have the opportunity to help remediate hunger.”

Customers donated 37 pre-assembled bags of food items at $10 each, in addition to numerous other non-perishable foodstuffs, goods and personal toiletry items, etc. for the Gifts of Love Food Drive.  The Canton ShopRite has raised over $7,800 for local food banks thus far.  The initiative runs through September 28th, and the store is expected to reach their $10,000 fundraising goal.

"It was wonderful to see the Canton community come together to Help Bag Hunger. The event was a tremendous success, bringing greater visibility to the hunger cause and raising funds for local food banks. We truly appreciate Representative LeGeyt's support in this initiative," said Chuck Joseph, Owner of the ShopRite in Canton.

ShopRite shoppers have the opportunity to support this initiative in several ways.  At checkout, shoppers may add $1 or $5 to their bill and support local food banks through Foodshare.  Each dollar buys a pound of food for Community Avon, Inc., Gifts of Love, the ARC of the Farmington Valley or Canton Food Bank.  For $10, they may purchase a preassembled bag of non-perishable food items and personal toiletries to be donated to Gifts of Love CT.

Joseph Family Markets runs the "Help Bag Hunger" event as part of National Hunger Action Month.
“Help Bag Hunger” is part of the ShopRite's year-round Partners In Caring Program, which has provided more than $27 million to homeless and hunger relief and other charitable agencies since it was launched in 1999, according to the company website.

The ShopRites of Canton and West Hartford are owned and operated by Joseph Family Markets, a locally-owned business founded in 2010 by Chuck and Debbie Joseph.   Since 2010, the company has generously provided more than $300,000 in financial support and product donations.
