State Rep. Tim LeGeyt Congratulates Canton Business Owner on Earning US Citizenship

Hartford State Representative Tim LeGeyt (R-17) was pleased to support Canton business owner Abdo Algahmi on becoming a United States Citizen.

“I was honored to attend the naturalization ceremony and support Abdo Algahmi this morning,” said State Rep. Tim LeGeyt (R-17).

After a year of working with the United States Customs and Immigration Office through the immigration process, Algahmi took the oath to become a citizen of the United States of America this morning at the Abraham Ribicoff Federal Building in Hartford.

Rep. LeGeyt further added, “I’ve known Abdo and his family for almost 7 years now.  He is a principled and modest man who is so honored to be able to live in our country and to raise his children here as well.”

A native of Yemen, Algahmi stated that he was very happy to become a citizen and that today was one of the best days of his life.

His path to naturalization began in 1993 when he came to America in pursuit of a better life.  After working six years in Manhattan, NY, Algahmi moved to Avon, where he worked for local businesses including the Hop Meadow Country Club.  Algahmi took a liking to the area, and decided it was here in Connecticut that he wanted to settle with his wife, Aziah, and their five children, ranging from ages 3-17.

In 2006, Algahmi and his business partner opened Cherry Brook Pizza and Groceries located on Cherry Brook Rd. in Canton.  The restaurant offers NY-style, thin crust pizza, in addition to pasta dinners, grinders, and burgers.  The store also sells gourmet coffees and grocery items.

Of Algahmi’s relationship with his customers, LeGeyt commented, “He is humble and sincere, and so dedicated to the customers who frequent his business.  Everybody is fond of him.”

“Abdo epitomizes the qualities we want to see in the persons who make up our immigrant citizenry-a strong ethical construct, an allegiance to our country, a commitment to family, and an appreciation of the opportunities that this country provides for those who, like Abdo, who work very hard in pursuit of their dream,” said LeGeyt.
