State Legislators Speak With Canton Seniors, Provide Legislative Update

CANTON – Last week, State Senator Kevin Witkos (R-8) and State Representative Tim LeGeyt (R-17) visited with seniors at the Canton Senior Center and provided the group with an update on the 2014 legislative session.

“I want to thank the Canton Senior Center for hosting such a great gathering,” said Sen. Witkos. “This event gave the people of Canton an opportunity to learn about new laws and some of the top issues debated in Hartford during the legislative session. This year, many legislative changes were made to help seniors in particular. I was very happy to share information about the impact of new legislation on the local community and help better connect people in the district with the goings-on in Hartford.”

Senator Witkos and Representative LeGeyt joined senior center members and constituents to discuss major legislative highlights and acts that were passed by state lawmakers this year.

“It is important that legislators inform their senior constituents about state government, and about new laws enacted to provide them with assistance,” said Rep. LeGeyt.  “During this year’s legislative session, many issues concerning senior citizens were raised and considered.  I thank all of the seniors who spent their afternoon with us and listened to the presentation.  I’d also like to thank Canton Senior & Social Services Director Claire Cote for her support.”

The legislators spoke on major acts passed by the General Assembly this year, which includes providing consumer protection regarding utility suppliers, aging in place, the rental rebate program, and expansion of the over-the-counter drug list.

The legislators agreed that more work is needed to be done to continue to provide quality services for our seniors in the coming years.
