Shuttle Meadow Honored as one of America's Best Classic Golf Courses

Shuttle Meadow Golf Course was recognized by Golfweek Magazine as one of America’s 2014 best classic courses. Golfweek has a circulation of 160,000 copies and publishes the list annually to recognize the best 200 courses built before 1960.

“Achieving national recognition among America’s elite golf courses is a tribute to the unique qualities of this historic course and its original 1916 design by one of the game’s most celebrated architects”, says Jerry Day, a former golf course developer, now Shuttle Meadow Board Member and Chair of the Green Committee.

Shuttle Meadow can trace its history to the turn of the 20th century when the club was formed by some of America’s foremost industrialists who set out to build one of this country’s first golden age golf courses. It was designed by Willie Park, Jr. a Scotsman, two time British Open Champion and now member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Over the years, the course has been played by the winners of more than 60 major championships, including 35 U.S. and British Opens.  Three years ago, Shuttle Meadow began restoring Willie Park, Jr.’s original design features, and perfecting turf conditions on the course. Day believes these actions are largely responsible for returning Shuttle Meadow to national recognition.

Andrew Hannah, the course superintendent was also pleased with the club’s inclusion in Golfweek’s top 200 classic courses, saying “Shuttle Meadow is honored by the national recognition and being named in this “Who’s Who” of great American golf courses. Golfweek’s acknowledgement of excellence is encouraging courses like Shuttle Meadow to achieve ever higher standards”.  Hannah has been working with Day in restoring the layout, and he credits his training at Merion Golf Club, site of the 2013 U.S. Open, and Century Golf Club, both also on Golfweek’s list, with his ability to achieve excellent turf conditioning at Shuttle Meadow.

Shuttle Meadow Country Club is a full service private club located in the central Connecticut Town of Kensington, with convenient access to a confluence of major highways. In addition to golf, the club offers pool, tennis, paddle tennis, and dining, both casual and formal. These features make Shuttle Meadow an attractive choice for members over a wide geographic area.
