HEALTHY LIVING AT FOCUS SUPPORTED BY UNICO NATIONAL

Canton, Conn. April 23, 2014

UNICO National and FOCUS Center for Autism are partnering to improve the lives of children on the Autism Spectrum. Families with children on the Autism Spectrum often feel lost when confronting challenges related to their child’s mental and physical health. Their complex needs can interfere with the ability to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. FOCUS Center for Autism is committed to addressing these critical issues through their therapeutic programming. UNICO National granted FOCUS $1,900 to fund a Healthy Living program that will engage children in activities that promote an active and healthy lifestyle. Children will have more opportunities for physical activity during FOCUS’s Extended Day Treatment Program, and will engage in therapeutic activities related to their physical and mental health.

The importance of FOCUS’s Healthy Living program cannot be emphasized enough. For children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, exercise can be a significant component to their overall wellbeing. Exercise is known to reduce stress and improve brain function. More importantly, exercise is an excellent way to socialize with peers. By following a regular exercise program, children are able to participate in structured activities and further develop their social skills.
