Canton and Avon residents in MACHINAL at Watkinson School

Watkinson School in Hartford' upper class produced  MACHINAL, written in 1927 by American journalist and playwright Sophie Treadwell this past November 8 & 9.  Based on real events, the play was a feminist and expressionist classic.   In nine distinctive scenes, it tells a tragic story about how the new urban office environment of the 1920s and social pressures of the time turn people--and most especially, young women-- into cogs in a machine, craving freedom and willing to take desperate action to get it.   Directed by Dr. Karen Bovard, Director of the Creative Arts Program at Watkinson, the show stared Regina Melady '14 of Hartford and Jack Whitescarver  '14 of West Hartford (CAP seniors in theater), the play also features soundscapes by West Hartford's Cyrus Duff '14 (CAP senior in music) and film montages by Hartford's Council Brandon '15 (CAP junior in film).
The following weekend, November 15 & 16, also at 7:30, Watkinson middle schoolers will present FASHIONISTAS:  A NARCISSISTIC LOVE STORY by Janet Allard.  This is a collaboration with the Education Department of Hartford Stage Company, and will be directed by visiting artist Ayla Kapiloff.  A mix of Greek Myth, Hamlet, and modern fashion-world challenges, this play asks the question, what is the cost of falling in love with illusion? The House of Narcissus fashion line is preparing for the fashion show of the season, but nothing is going as planned and Donatella and Valentino will lose everything if this isn’t a success. Models have lost their shoes, an animal-rights activist is sabotaging furs, Echo is in love with Narcissus, and Narcissus is consumed by the one thing he can never obtain: himself. It’s a world of unrequited love, insatiable desire and fabulous clothes.  Tickets available at the door (cash or check):  $5 for students/seniors, $10 for adults.
Watkinson School is Hartford's oldest independent day school serving students in grades 6-12/PG.  Their next open house is December 3rd at 6pm.
