HARTFORD - State Representative Tim LeGeyt (R-17) joined Democratic and Republican legislative leaders along with municipal leaders, officials, professionals and the public from around the state as the School Safety Working Group of the Bipartisan Task Force held informational and public hearings to address matters relating to enhancing school safety and security.
The School Safety Working Group is one of three sub committees of the Bipartisan Task Force on Gun Violence Prevention & Children's Safety that was formed earlier this month to address key issues as a result of the tragedy in Newtown.
The informational hearing included testimony from school administrators, leaders, and mental health professionals, as well as municipal officials and leaders who spoke on a broad range of topics from the availability of mental health resources and crisis intervention in schools, to the lack of uniformity in the various ways that districts throughout the state coordinate safety and emergency management resources between local law enforcement and schools.
During the public hearing, parents, school mental health professionals, and members of the community expressed their concerns regarding school security, lack of available mental health resources in schools, and overall well-being of their children.
"Today, we heard testimony from members of various communities across our state. They were school and mental health professionals, organizational and municipal leaders, parents, and concerned citizens. I feel that it has been extremely beneficial to hear these dedicated professionals and citizens share their thoughtful remarks. As a former educator for over 30 years, I understand the importance of making our schools a safe place where our children can learn and grow. I will be considering all of this testimony as we have serious discussion on the best resources to keep our children and the administrators and staff in our school systems safe," said LeGeyt.
