Local Vet Hopes to Open Emergency Center by Fall

Zoning Commission approves plans for former KinderCare building.

A local veterinary doctor said she hopes to open a "Vet Emergency Center" on Dowd Avenue by the fall.  Dr. Shannon Bertolino of Canton, along with her husband Vincent, were granted special exception from the Canton Zoning Commission Wednesday night to open the facility at 135 Dowd Ave. at the former child-care center, most recently operated as KinderCare.  The Bertolinos said the facility would be a no appointment necessary center for sudden trauma. Care would be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week but primarily be utilized evenings and weekends, when normal vet offices are closed.  Shannon Bertolino told the commission that the facility will not board pets, house any permanently or perform routine care. The Art of Organic Hair Care

Salon owner says Collinsville is the perfect location for business.

In a community known for the arts, hair may not be the typical canvas but for Rootz owner Jennifer Gero, tending to those numerous strands in an environmentally friendly manner is an expression. “Hairdressing has become an art for me and my art is about organic living,” Gero said. Since day one, Gero has sought to offer salon services in a different way. She feels that many of the traditional products used in salons are not good for the environment or those using them. “Inhaling those on a daily basis is not good,” she said. While she does sell non-certified Paul Mitchell products, Gero said she uses four certified styling lines. Of course their not the least expensive products but there but Gero feels she remains competitive, especially …

Emergency Veterinary Hospital Proposed at Former KinderCare Site

Public hearing slated for Wednesday, May 16.

This week, the Canton Zoning Commission is scheduled to hold a public hearing on a proposed emergency veterinary hospital at the former KinderCare child-care center on Dowd Ave.  Shannon and Vincent Bertolino are applying to put the facility, for pet treatment in "situations of sudden illness and trauma," at 135 Dowd Ave., at the corner of Canton Springs Road, according to town records. Under current zoning, the business needs a special exception. As part of that, the commission will consider the circumstances of the proposed use, its consistency with the character of the neighborhood, parking, access and more. Prior to approval, the property owner should remedy some situations that do not meet prior site-plan approval, such as grading of …

Collinsville Family Looks to Make Letters Relevant in the Digital World

Website offers a place to preserve old memories and create new ones.

For many letters are becoming a thing of the past. Most correspondence from the younger generation comes in a barrage of short digital messages and the memories of the elderly often sit in a shoebox, slowly succumbing to time and the elements. But Drew Bartkiewicz of Collinsville, with the help of his family, has launched an ambitious project designed to preserve those old memories, help create new ones, bridge that generational communication gap and make letters meaningful again. Welcome to http://lett.rs, an effort to bring letters into the digital age. “We just need letters to catch up to the Internet,” Bartkiewicz said. The site does that in many ways. Registered users, who only need an e-mail and password, can scan or photograph those…

HomeGoods to Occupy Former Borders Location

The company agreed to lease the Bushy Hill retail space in April.

It's been almost a year since the Borders Group closed its Simsbury location and the building has remained empty ever since. Soon, the vacant retail space at 500 Bushy Hill Road will once again be host to consumer activity. Last month, Charter Realty and Development announced that it has leased the 23,500-square-foot retail space to HomeGoods. HomeGoods, a TJX Company, is a retail home fashion store introduced in 1992 and operates approximately 336 stores, according to Charter Realty. Hiram Peck, Director of Planning and Land Use for the town of Simsbury, said the town has not received any applications for signage or floor plans from the company. Before the company moves forward with use of the space it will have to present plans to town …

Cancer Patients Are Stylist's First Priority

For 17 years, East Granby woman has made it her business to supply much-needed wigs.

What began as a favor to a client quickly became a lifelong commitment for a local hair stylist to help cancer patients look and feel the best they can for the past 17 years. Joyce Tullock, of East Granby, has been a hair stylist for most of her life, and formerly owned and operated Concepts I and Concepts II hair salons in Simsbury and Canton. When one of her clients asked for her help during one of the most trying times in her life, she didn't hesitate to assist her. "I had a client who came to me and said she had been diagnosed with cancer and that she was going to lose her hair," Tullock said. "She asked me to order a wig for her." At the time, and still today, there are no businesses in the area offering such a service, Tullock …
