Velomobiles Spotted in Collinsville

Three riders attract attention with 'human powered vehicles.'

Three riders with velomobiles garnered some attention Saturday as they rode the "human powered vehicles" into Collinsville.

The "vehicles" consist of a recumbent or trike-type bicycle with a shell built around it. They often have electronic lights, mirrors, suspension and a t-type steering system. Numerous options and materials are available.

Howard Pfrommer of Killingworth, Mike Zych of Terryville and Merrill Gay of New Britain rode from the latter city to Collinsville Saturday. The three use the vehicles for commuting as well as riding for pleasure.

"For me it's a good combination of exercise, getting to work and fun," Pfrommer said.

Gay even joined a fleet of riders for Roll Over America, a 2011 ride from Portland, Oregon to Washington, D.C. He chronicled the trip in this blog
