Canton Musicians Learn to Improvise at Jazz Camp

Concert ends week of learning.

After a week of hard work, approximately 10 middle-school aged students showcase their skills in jazz improvisation Friday morning.

The students had studied for a week in jazz camp, offered by Canton public schools last week. Prior to the concert, head teacher Tom Moran told parents he was pound of students for taking the journey into jazz music. It's not easy to put oneself out there to solo in front of a crowd, he said.

"Everyone who takes a solo is really taking a giant step into a whole new world," he said.

Under the guidance of instructors, the students performed "How High the Moon," "Blue Bossa," "So What," and a 12-bar blues.

This is the second year the school district has offered the camp, during which students learn much about music and the genre.
